When I was asked this question on my 1st day of my teacher training the answer was “Because I want to share this amazing practice with as many people as possible.” This was my rational reason.
This was strong enough reason to do a intensive training, to pay a lot of money for a course like I had never done in my life… it was even more expensive than the 3 years of uni I had done in London!!
I obviously loved the practice, I knew it was something that had a huge impact on me.
It was the 1st time in over 30 years that I was enjoying something so much and for a longer period than I had ever before.
I usually wouldn’t hold on to a job, live in the same place, have the same friends, dress the same way, like the same things for more than 2 years, 3 years would be pushing it.
I had been practicing yoga at Hot Power Yoga/Lliv Yoga in London for over 3 years and being so eager to learn more and share with others meant really something. I didn’t even research other YTT’s as I loved so much the studio, the teachers, I had trusted them with my body, my practice for 3 years so I gathered I could trust them for the YTT.
I am sure this also happen to you, something came to you disguised in one thing and become another. (can’t think of a disguise … but for the sake of the example let’s say it came disguise as a fairy and then it was actually an angel … heheheheeh … cheesy comparison but you get the point ☺️ )
What is the meaning of the angel you ask?
So let me explain, we learn the poses, we learn the yoga history, we learn anatomy, all the technical stuff but as part of the yoga philosophy we learn the Yoga Sutras.
Yoga Sutras it is considered a manual to practice yoga. There’s just a small section about the practice of yoga poses and the book starts by saying that if you understand the 1st sutra you don’t need to read/study any further.
The sutra say’s: "Yogash citta vrtti nirodha" : yoga is the cessation of the modifications, or fluctuations, of the mind.
In essence you will be learning about you, your mind, your body and your soul.
You will be re-learning, un-learning, discovering, re-discovering, you will be peeling the layers of the onion (onion being you) until you get to the centre of the onion, to its core, to your core, which is your natural you or self.
Not every YTT does this type of work. I am forever grateful to the universe that without knowing I ended up in a YTT that did/does this work … because … I needed it a LOT !!!!
When you do the internal work teaching becomes easy, life becomes easy, struggles are easy to overcome, the moments you feel down go from days to just a few minutes.
Life unfolds in front of you for you.
What has this to do with being a yoga teacher? HAHA !!! …. everything!
Yoga are not the poses, Yoga is YOU. Yoga is you being your own student, learning from your own path and then teaching from your experience in your journey.
Off course there are yoga teachers that have learnt to call out the poses and that’s all they've learnt or maybe choose to do.
I am not sure what to say about that but I know that I can only connect with teachers that have done the work to connect with themselves.
It is a bit like that saying; “How do you want someone to love you if you don’t love yourself.”
In this case “How do you want students to connect with their bodies, feelings, mind, soul if you have not connected with yours?”
I love this picture with my teacher, last year teaching in ibiza.
So the yoga poses are just a means to an end, even though there’s never an end with yoga.
This inner work had such a great impact on me, I was riding the wave of the effects of it for the next 3 years.
Then it came the time I was ready to go deeper so I enrolled to do the same teacher training with the same teacher. This time I did not have to worry too much about learning the sequence and how to queue up the poses so I immersed myself deeply into learning more about my self, the mind, human beings, our place in the world and have sharpen my ability to notice the fluctuations of the mind not only in myself but in others.
This was not the only work I did, but it was my milestone.
My work is actually every day, when I teach, when I speak with my family - still a some work to do here 🙄 - when I am with friends and in every day life situations.
Help men and women to be in the DRIVER seat of their life and to awaken their inner POWER.
